Opera sensation Wynne Evans, known for the unforgettable Go Compare adverts, won’t flaunt his famous moustache in the Strictly Come Dancing competition.

Bestowed instant fame from his appearance in the Go Compare ads, Welsh opera star Wynne Evans had the Strictly judges grinning as he sambaed to Tom Jones’s ‘Help Yourself’ alongside pro Katya Jones, landing a commendable 5th place with 26 points last week.

With Evans, aged 52, once again in the public eye after some time, the chatter around the tenor’s sizeable ad-generated wealth is making the rounds.

Radio Times recently quizzed him about whether his iconic, original curly moustache from the adverts might make a cameo on Strictly. “I’ve got the original at home in a frame, as it paid for my house,” Wynne disclosed.

A playful jab from his dance partner Katya reminded him to keep it modest, but Wynne humorously retorted: “Katya will soon be praying at the shrine of the Go Compare moustache. Can I ask you a question, Katya? You know how you’ve done Strictly since 2016? Do you ever get a bit like: [sighs]? ” Katya firmly responded, “No and the moment I do, I won’t be here”, reports the Mirror.

TV legend Wynne has always been quick to quell speculation about his hefty earnings, insisting that claims he pocketed £450,000 for a two-year advertising contract were overcooked.

He acknowledged receiving a ‘generous’ salary but deemed the figures cited as ‘not true’.

Notably, in 2022, he drew a comparison with Gary Lineker’s lucrative career, stating: “Like Gary Lineker, I work for the BBC and appear in a long-running advertising campaign. But sadly, he earns somewhat more than me.”

Grilled by the press in 2016 over whether he was raking in ‘silly money,’ the celebrity quipped humorously in response: “Silly money? That would suggest that I’ve been paid too much, and that’s never happened! But yeah, you do have to pinch yourself sometimes, and think: ‘Gosh, I’m very lucky’. For example, I once did an opera recording where I only had about six notes to sing. I was paid the equivalent of £300 a note. That was fantastic.”

Despite rumours pointing to a net worth in the region of £100 million, Wynne retains a veil of mystery over his financial situation. However, he did share that his Mercedes set him back a cool £45,000 before he switched it out for another model at £30,000, opting for cash payment to avoid debt.

“I paid for it in cash, because I’m getting to a stage in life where I don’t want debt hanging over me,” he confided.
