Although the COVID-19 pandemic caused disruption to Crystal Nivedita Shobha’s schooling, it did nothing to dampen her fighting spirit.
Level-headed and composed, the 23-year-old from Nabua forged ahead.
She recently graduated from the University of the South Pacific with a bachelor of science degree in Chemistry and Biology.
With a formal qualification in the bag, she can now look forward to a bright future.
“I’m graduating after COVID-19, so it feels extra special,” she said.
“It’s been a long road, but I’m really grateful for all the support I’ve had along the way.”
During her three years at USP, Crystal found love and affection in the close-knit Tongan community in Fiji.
“I want to give a special shout-out to my friends in Tonga,” Crystal said warmly.
“I studied with a lot of Tongans, and some graduated locally, but many flew in to support me here today. It means the world to me.”
Crystal credits her teachers and friends in high school for inculcating in her a love for science.
“I was always passionate about science. Biology came naturally to me because it helped me understand why things happen—the reasons behind everything. I studied science because I wanted answers to my curiosity.”
Crystal is pragmatic about the challenges that come with her choice of vocation.
“There aren’t many job opportunities in science in Fiji,” she said.
She currently works in her dad’s company. At the same time, she continues to look for work opportunities where she can put her qualification to good use.
“It’s not what I studied for, but I’m learning a lot,” she said.
“I’ll continue working until more science-related opportunities arise.”
Looking ahead, Crystal’s ambitions are clear.
“I plan to pursue my MBA next year,” she revealed.
“I’m excited to explore new challenges and expand my knowledge. Who knows where that could take me?”
Crystal’s determination to keep moving forward, despite the obstacles, is inspiring.
When asked what advice she would give to students still navigating their way through USP, Crystal’s message was simple.
“The journey will be hard, but if you have the support of your friends and family, you’ll find the motivation and commitment to get things done,” she said.
Crystal credits her parents for supporting her through thick and thin.
“I couldn’t have done it without them.”
“My friends and family were there throughout the entire journey, pushing me when things got tough, and celebrating every little win with me.”
As she opens another new chapter in her life, Crystal remains driven by her love for science.
Though the future seems uncertain, she believes her resilience and curiosity will lead her to greater heights.
For now, she is enjoying the moment—celebrating her hard-earned success with those who believed in her the most.
