Potlotek greenhouse provides important education opportunity to local Indigenous youth

The new Potlotek greenhouse and garden has been the grounds for agricultural and cultural education for local Indigenous youth.

Mary Basque, 17, has enjoyed her experience as one of the youth workers on the team. Basque has spent the past month working in the greenhouse and garden with the Youth Farmers Market Program.

“The first week I was kind of nervous because I wasn’t really confident with plants and stuff, but we’re all kind of learning as we go. Another thing I see is team communication, it was kind of weak when we first started, but we all learned to grow and properly communicate about plants,” Basque said.

“My favourite skill I learned was probably with the hydroponics. It was kind of quick, but we learned the plants that are good in the colder weather and we learned how to grow those in hotter weather with nitrogen and potassium and phosphoric fertilizer.”
