With the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua side having seven home matches for the 2025 Super Rugby season, the team needs to set a winning streak from their very first home game to enhance their chances of winning away matches as well.
Mark Evans, the team’s chief executive officer, emphasised this in an interview earlier this week.
“Everybody knows, it’s plainly obvious, the contrast between our home form and our away form is very marked,” he said.
“That’s not unusual for a young team, you tend to start winning your games at home first.”
Evans noted that many of the side’s players who have advanced onward from the franchise were winning away games on a regular basis with the Flying Fijians.
“We’ve got so many players in the Flying Fijians now, and they’re winning away games quite regularly.”
Noting the Flying Fijian wins in overseas matches, Evans added it was only a matter of time before the fluctuating performances in away matches would phase out for the Drua as well.
“They’re the same players, largely, so I think it’s probably only a matter of time,” he said.
“I don’t think it’s a big psychological block or anything. Otherwise, it would apply when they play for the national team as well.”
“And it doesn’t seem to have applied.”
In the 2024 season, the Drua lost eight of their away games and two home games as well.
