The Hyogo nori research institute in the city of Akashi, Hyogo Prefecture, has begun the process of attaching spores of nori seaweed onto nets. The prefecture is known for nori seaweed farming. Hundreds of nets, each about 1.6 meters wide and 20 meters long, are wrapped around nine waterwheels. Then, the nets are dipped into tanks that are filled with spores and pulled out and placed into a separate tank, where the spores are attached onto the nets. By late October, 45,000 nets will be ready for farming.
Note: Nori is a thin sheet of dried seaweed used as a seasoning or as a wrapper for onigiri rice balls. The seaweed used to produce the sheets is also called nori.
