It’s no secret that Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Croatia have some of Europe’s best beaches.
Each of these destinations provides unique coastal experiences.
Greece’s Navagio Beach is breathtaking and Italy’s Spiaggia dei Conigli has stunning sands.
Portugal’s Praia da Marinha has spectacular cliffs, while Spain’s Playa de Ses Illetes offers a peaceful Caribbean-like atmosphere.
Then there is Croatia’s Zlatni Rat which captivates visitors with its unique shape and crystal-clear waters.
Together, these countries are the centers of European beach vacations. But let’s get more specific.
The Epitome of Clarity: Europe’s Clearest Waters
Cala Mariolu, Sardinia
I recommend “the most beautiful beach in Italy” in 2016. It’s called Cala Mariolu.
It is located in Sardinia and has white pebbles, crystal-clear turquoise waters and dramatic cliffs with lush greenery.
I also recommend this beach for snorkeling because of its underwater caves.
Cala Marioul is only accessible via a challenging hike, making it an ideal location for both relaxation and adventure.
Don’t worry, I’m kidding; it’s accessible via boat too.
Blue Lagoon, Cyprus
Another crystal-clear water, rocky cliffs and greenery scenario await you in Cyprus‘ Blue Lagoon.
I would say that the lagoon’s shallow waters are ideal for swimming and snorkeling.
Also, this is a very popular destination for couples who enjoy watching beautiful sunsets. But if you’re looking for excitement rather than romance, start reading the next option.
Ölüdeniz, Türkiye
Ok, time for some adrenaline. Ölüdeniz, Türkiye (Turkey) is a beautiful beach famous for its stunning Blue Lagoon and crystal-clear waters that range from azure to turquoise.
The beach has a really unique crescent shape, “decorated” with lush mountains.
And for the bravest ones, I recommend one of the most popular activities in Ölüdeniz: paragliding from the nearby Babadağ Mountain.
It rises about 1,960 meters above sea level, providing an amazing view of the coastline and lagoon. So, would you dare?
Calanque d’En-Vau, Cassis, France
Luckily, I don’t have to pronounce it in French. Anyway, Calanque d’En-Vau, France is a breathtaking beach with dramatic limestone cliffs and crystal-clear turquoise water.
It is located on the French Riviera, roughly 150 kilometers from Nice.
Because of its abundance of vegetation and fauna, I recommend it to nature enthusiasts. And also to photography enthusiasts, of course. Especially during the sunset.
Navagio, Zakynthos
In my opinion, Navagio Beach, Greece is really special. This hidden gem is famous for its spectacular limestone cliffs that rise dramatically above the crystal-clear water.
And a fun fact: the beach is also known for the wreck of the MV Panagiotis, a ship that ran aground in the 1980s. Yes, you will be able to see it because it is located on the most popular part of the beach.
Keep in mind that Navagio Beach is only accessible by boat, so I recommend going from nearby towns like Zakynthos Town or Porto Vromi.
Do I need to mention that it is preferable to arrive early in the morning?
Something Different…
Reynisfjara, Iceland
I know that, based on the previous suggestions, you expect white sand and classic scenery, which is precisely why I am going for something different. Reynisfjara, Iceland.
It is a famous black sand beach with dramatic basalt columns that perfectly complement the Atlantic Ocean’s waves.
This unique beach was formed by volcanic activity. You can enjoy walking along the beach, but be careful with the “sneaker waves.”
Swimming can also be dangerous because of powerful, unpredictable waves and strong undercurrents. But it is a great spot for birdwatching, particularly for puffins, which nest on the nearby cliffs during the summer.

Lanzarote, Canary Islands
Lanzarote, one of the most intriguing Canary Islands, is known for its amazing volcanic landscapes.
But if you’re looking for something really special and different, I recommend Playa del Charco de los Clicos.
It is a volcanic beach with red cliffs, black sand and an emerald-green lake. It sounds almost unbelievable, doesn’t it?

The Pinnacle of Coastal Beauty: Top 3 Beaches
Cala Goloritzé, Italy
I believe that dramatic cliffs and unique rock formations, paired with crystal-clear waters, always result in an amazing scene. If you agree, consider Cala Goloritzé.
It is located on the rough coastline of Italian Sardinia, with white pebbles and towering limestone cliffs.
Cala Goloritzé is also known for its abundant marine life, so I recommend it for water sports enthusiasts, particularly snorkelers and divers.
However, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is only accessible by hiking trail or boat. But the best things don’t come easily, do they?
Croatia, Zlatni Rat
As a Croatian, I am very proud that our Croatian beach is on this list, and it is well-deserved. If in doubt, just look at the photos.
Zlatni Rat is a lovely beach on Croatia‘s Brač Island. It is known for its unique triangle shape and stretches into the Adriatic Sea’s crystal-clear blue waters.
With its fine pebbles and pine trees, it is perfect for sunbathing. It is also ideal for surfers because of the favorable winds.
I recommend Zlatni Rat if you enjoy snorkeling because our Croatian Adriatic Sea is known for its crystal-clear water.
That’s how Zlatni Rat gained a blue flag as well as a spot on this flattering list of the top European beaches.
Elafonisi, Greece
I simply had to suggest Elafonisi in Crete, Greece. Why? Because it has something very unique: pink sand and crystal-clear waters.
Yes, you read that correctly: pink sand.
Are you wondering how? It’s not magic; the pink sand is made up of crushed seashells and coral.
Also, Elafonisi is part of a protected nature reserve. This area has a diverse ecosystem, and I recommend paying attention to the famous Cretan wild goat, known as Kri-kri.
On Elafonisi Beach, you can rent umbrellas (for approximately ten euros). And I’m sure that the mix of blue water and pink sand will be something that you will remember.
White Sand Wonders of Europe
Algarve, Portugal
The Algarve in Portugal is filled with stunning beaches such as Praia da Marinha (the best time to visit it is during low tide) and Praia da Rocha.
What are they famous for? Golden sand, dramatic cliffs and crystal-clear waters, of course.
Algarve’s mild climate makes it a year-round destination. So, if you’re looking for a more affordable trip, I recommend the off-season.
It might not be warm enough to swim, but it will still be pleasant, and there will be far fewer tourists.
Menorca, Spain
Menorca, unlike its more popular neighbors, Mallorca and Ibiza, has a more peaceful and relaxing vibe.
It is one of Spain’s Balearic Islands and has more than 200 beaches, including the popular Cala Macarella and Cala Mitjana.
It is famed for its nice white sands and turquoise waters, as well as steep cliffs and hidden coves; therefore, I recommend it to, well, everyone.
Sicily’s & Corsica’s Sandy Beaches
Sicily’s sand beaches, such as the famous San Vito Lo Capo, provide a combination of crystal-clear waters with a thriving local culture.
Corsica, on the other hand, hides its beauty in hidden gems such as Plage de Saleccia, where silky white sands meet lush greenery.
Where to Find the Purest Waters in Europe
When it comes to the clearest waters in Europe, I believe Sardinia and Crete stand out for their unmatched clarity.
You know those photos where little boats appear to be floating in the air when they are actually on extraordinarily clear water?
Of course, this is why Sardinia and Crete have gained fame, as well as large crowds.
So, if you want to discover lesser-known clear-water paradises, I suggest Montenegro (Blue Grotto, Kotor Bay) and the Balearic Islands (Cala Galdana in Menorca).

As you can see, Europe has plenty of beautiful beaches. Croatia, Spain, Italy, Greece… there are plenty of options.
Popular countries are generally very safe; the climate is Mediterranean, the water is crystal-clear, and nature is truly amazing.
