Public Works, Transport and Meteorological Services Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau has called on students to consider careers in the maritime field.
Ro Filipe told World Maritime Day celebrations at Albert Park in Suva yesterday there was a need for more skilled workers in the maritime sector workforce.
He said with skilled personnel moving abroad to ply their trade there, more students could choose maritime careers to fill the gap created by the departure of those skilled workers.
“As we know that one of the big issues being faced by Fiji is the outward movement of our technically skilled people,” he said.
“Thank you to the students, thank you for choosing the maritime industry for your career, and we need more.
“I know that some companies, the shipping operators, have difficulty in finding qualified crew and that is very important.”
Ro Filipe said the annual celebration was dedicated to recognising the crucial role of the maritime sector, emphasising safety, innovation and sustainable practices.
This year’s theme, Navigating the future: Safety First, Ro Filipe said emphasised the importance of maritime safety in navigating towards a safer and more sustainable maritime future.
