CHICAGO (Kyodo) — Chicago Cubs starter Shota Imanaga threw seven no-hit innings before handing off to the bullpen to complete a combined no-hitter in a 12-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday.
The Japanese southpaw struck out seven and allowed only a pair of walks as he improved to 12-3 in his stellar first season in Major League Baseball.
Relievers Nate Pearson and Porter Hodge each contributed a 1-2-3 inning to wrap up the first no-hitter at Wrigley Field since 1972 and the 18th in Cubs history, according to MLB.com.
Imanaga exited at the end of the seventh after throwing 95 pitches, 66 for strikes. While the two walks were his only blemishes, his pitch count was inflated by three Cubs errors.
Seiya Suzuki went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Dansby Swanson and Pete Crow-Armstrong each had a home run and three RBIs for the Cubs.
