The Hibiscus Carnival of 1992 brought tropical fantasy to Suva City.

The Fiji Times reported in an article on Monday, August 17, 1992, the buzz of excitement in Suva as the Hibiscus Carnival kicked off at Albert Park the past Saturday.

The week-long festivities were set to offer a vibrant array of events and cultural showcases, including Indian, Fijian, Polynesian nights, and a striking Chinese dragon dance.

The carnival also featured a special Senior Citizens Day.

At the heart of that year’s carnival was the anticipated Hibiscus Carnival Fashion Show, themed “Tropical Fantasy”.

According to Anna Sweetman, the fashion show organiser, attendees could expect an evening full of surprises and prizes.

“We are giving you a wonderful evening of tropical fantasy, our theme for this year, so you must be there to see what it’s all about,” says Anna Sweetman, fashion show organiser.

“The night promises to be one full of surprises and prizes.”

She said the fashion show, presented by Air New Zealand, would take place at Scandals, Noble House, Bau St, Suva, starting at 6:30pm.

Tickets were priced at $12 and included complimentary savouries, raffles, and door prizes.

The event would have also featured dancing with Ken Janson and The Hearts.

Fashion highlights of the show included tropical ensembles from Tanya Whiteside, Expozay swimwear, and men’s suits by Rags and Riches.

With a blend of glamorous fashion and lively entertainment, Ms Sweetman said the Hibiscus Carnival promised to deliver a memorable celebration of Suva’s vibrant culture.
